What the lesson covers

  1. 0:00When the overnight rate is already at zero, the Fed needs another lever.
  2. 0:05What QE does. The Fed buys longer-dated bonds, which pushes their prices up and their yields down.
  3. 0:14The important distinction. This is not printing money in the everyday sense. It swaps one asset for another.
  4. 0:23Tightening. QT is mostly passive: bonds mature and are not replaced, so the balance sheet shrinks.
  5. 0:32The honest uncertainty. Economists still disagree about how much of the effect is real and how much is signalling.
  6. 0:40It works on long rates, and partly by telling markets what comes next.
