What the lesson covers

  1. 0:00A foreign dividend arrives already reduced by another country's tax.
  2. 0:05The deduction. The source country takes its cut first. A treaty usually reduces the rate.
  3. 0:15Whether you get it back. In a taxable account a credit may offset it. In a retirement account it is usually lost.
  4. 0:24The placement consequence. This is one case where the sheltered account is the wrong place to hold something.
  5. 0:33Inside a fund. A fund holding foreign stocks passes the withholding through, and may pass the credit too.
  6. 0:41Check the rate and the account before holding foreign income.
