Which Shares Did You Just Sell?
When you hold several lots, the method decides which one is sold — and that decides the gain reported.

What the Lesson Covers
- 0:00You bought the same stock four times. Which shares did you just sell?
- 0:05The same sale, three answers. Identical shares sold at an identical price, and three completely different reported gains.
- 0:15Why the default is FIFO. Brokers default to selling the oldest lot, which is often the largest gain.
- 0:24The timing requirement. The lot must be identified at or before the sale. You cannot choose afterwards.
- 0:33The other consideration. The oldest lot may also be the long-term one, which carries the lower rate.
- 0:41Set the method deliberately, before the sale.
