Overlaying two securities on one price axis is meaningless. Rebasing both to a common start is what makes the comparison real.

What the Lesson Covers

  1. 0:00Putting a $400 stock and a $12 stock on one axis tells you nothing.
  2. 0:05The fix. Rebase both to a hundred at the start date. Now the lines are comparable.
  3. 0:14The start date decides the story. Move the start back three months and the winner and loser can swap places.
  4. 0:23The ratio chart. Dividing one by the other removes the start date question entirely.
  5. 0:32The honest presentation. Show the start date, and check whether it was chosen or just convenient.
  6. 0:40Rebase, state the start date, and prefer the ratio.
