What the lesson covers

  1. 0:00Beta is quoted like a property of a stock. It is a statistic about the past.
  2. 0:05The definition. How much the stock moved for each one percent the market moved, on average.
  3. 0:14Volatility is a different thing. Beta measures movement with the market. Volatility measures movement, full stop.
  4. 0:23Where it fails. In a crash correlations converge toward one and low-beta names fall with everything else.
  5. 0:32Using it properly. Treat it as a rough expectation of sensitivity, and check the window it was measured over.
  6. 0:40It is an estimate from a past window, not a promise about the next one.
