The set-up that will not tell you which way

Volatility reverts, so a multi-month low in range says a big move is close. It says nothing about direction — and the head-fake is what happens when that is forgotten.

What the lesson covers

  1. 0:00This one has no shape at all. It is a measurement: the quietest this market has been in months.
  2. 0:06The shape. Ranges narrowing week after week until the bands pinch around price. No flag, no triangle, nothing to recognise — just a range at a multi-month low.
  3. 0:17Why it forms. Volatility reverts. Quiet follows quiet until it does not, and there is very little narrower left to go. That is the whole foundation.
  4. 0:27The levels that matter. The top and bottom of the range, the width between them, and the trend it sits in. That last one is not a price and it decides the direction.
  5. 0:37Where it completes. It completes on a close outside the range on a bar visibly wider than the ones inside it. Back inside the range and the resolution has un-resolved.
  6. 0:48How often it follows through. Sixty to sixty-six, and only when it resolves with the trend it sits in. Read as a coin flip on direction, it is far worse.
  7. 0:57The same shape failing. The head-fake. Price leaves one side on a narrow bar, collects everybody watching for it, then expands hard through the other side.
  8. 1:08The tells. A departure bar no wider than the range, a close back inside within days, or a squeeze sitting in no trend at all.
  9. 1:18A contraction tells you how big. Nothing in it tells you which way.
