What the lesson covers

  2. 0:05The mechanism. The broker lends your shares to a short seller and collects a fee for it.
  3. 0:14What changes for you. The dividend becomes a substitute payment, taxed at your ordinary rate.
  4. 0:23Who gets the fee. By default the broker keeps it. Some offer a programme that shares it with you.
  5. 0:32How to avoid it. A cash account cannot lend fully paid shares. That is the actual control.
  6. 0:40Check your statement, and know what the agreement permits.
