Why identical configuration matters
Comparing two charts with different timeframes, different scales or different averages is comparing two renderings rather than two securities. Any impression formed from the grid is then partly an artefact of the settings.
This is the same argument the layouts article makes about per-ticker configuration, and it applies with more force here, because the whole purpose of the grid is a side-by-side comparison.
What synchronisation adds
- A shared date range, so every chart covers the same period.
- A linked crosshair, so the same date is being read across all of them.
- A shared scale type, since a logarithmic chart and an arithmetic one are not comparable.
- A common indicator set, so a reading on one means the same as on another.

How many is too many
Beyond a handful, individual charts become too small to read and the grid becomes a pattern of shapes rather than a set of charts. That is not necessarily useless, and it is a different activity from reading any of them.

What it is for
A grid is a scanning surface: it decides which security to open, not what to do about it. Treating it as an analysis surface is where the density starts producing conclusions that the size of each chart cannot support.
The natural pairing is a grid to narrow a list and a single full-size chart with saved drawings for anything that survives it, which is the division the charting guides describe.
What to look at in a grid
At small sizes, only a few properties are readable, and knowing which they are makes the grid useful rather than merely dense.

The fourth row on the left is what a grid is genuinely best at. A chart that does not look like the others in a set of peers is the fastest way to find something worth opening, and it requires no detail at all.
That is the same function the heatmap performs with colour instead of shape, and the two answer the same question at different levels of detail.
